What is Jazz?

Jazz is an original American musical art form originating around the start of the 20th century in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is marked by the profound cultural contributions of African Americans. It is characterized by blue notes, syncopation, swing, call and response and improvisation. Jazz is described as "America's Classical Music."

- Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie developed the jazz style known as bebop.
- Fast tempos and difficult eighth-note melodies were popular in bebop.
- Bebop is based on improvisation which means musicians memorized the melody and the chords and then they "made up" or improvised the introduction, solos, and ending.
- Dizzy Gillespie played the trumpet. Two interesting facts about Dizzy Gillespie are: he played a bent trumpet, and he puffed his cheeks when he played. One of Dizzy's famous songs was "Night in Tunisia."
- Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie developed the jazz style known as bebop.
